Zone Zero: the first five feet

The five feet around your home is where embers most often find fuel. We clear it and rebuild it with noncombustible materials that still look good.

Noncombustible gravel strip along the base of a home with fiber cement siding

Bark mulch, shrubs against the wall, wood fences attached to the house, stored firewood and dry leaves all give embers something to ignite right next to the structure. Zone Zero work removes that fuel and replaces it with gravel, pavers, concrete and other noncombustible surfaces.

Because we also do hardening, we handle the connection between the ground and the house: the base of the siding, deck undersides, fence connections and vents near grade. California is finalizing statewide Zone Zero regulations. We will explain where the rules stand when we visit, but the work is worth doing on its own merit.

What affects the scope

Every property is different, so we price from a site visit rather than a guess. These are the things that change the scope and cost most.

  • Perimeter length and access
  • Existing landscaping and irrigation
  • Surface material selection
  • Slope and drainage
  • Attached fences, gates and structures

FAQ

Common questions

Are Zone Zero rules in effect?

California's Board of Forestry has been developing statewide Zone Zero regulations, and the final rules and timelines are still being completed. We track the status and will tell you what applies to your property; we do not want you to rely on outdated deadlines.

Do I have to remove all plants near my house?

The goal is to keep the zone free of combustible material. Some approaches allow limited, well-maintained plants; the stricter the zone is kept, the better it performs. We will walk through options with you.

What about my wood fence?

Wood fences that attach to the house can carry fire to the wall. We typically replace the last section next to the home with a noncombustible material.
